Confusion! Why were both the Cowboys and Browns’ offenses on the field together in the 3rd quarter? K.D. Drummond Someone messed up. With the Dallas Cowboys dominating the action on the field in the Week 1 matchup, a confusing situation arose in the third quarter. After being stymied in the first half for just 54 total yards, the Cleveland offense had a boo-inspiring three and out to start the third quarter. Things got worse when Kavontae Turpin took the punt back 60 yards for a score, giving Dallas a 27-3 lead. Cleveland’s offense finally woke up, but found themselves in 3rd-and-10 from just inside the Cowboys’ 16-yard line. The pass was complete to Amari Cooper for what looked like 10 yards, but things got weird when Cleveland races up to the line of scrimmage for a quick snap. The Cowboys were able to thwart a bootleg by QB Dashaun Watson as rookie Marshawn Kneeland had pressure and Watson threw the ball out of the end zone. Dallas’ defense celebrated wildly for what seemed like a first down incompletion, and then all of a sudden Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense was on the field. What happened? The expedited attempt by Cleveland fooled the Cowboys into thinking it was fourth down, that the completion was short of the yard marker, and they had a stand. And guess what? They weren’t exactly wrong. Looking closely at the placement of the ball after the prior first down and where it was marked after Cooper’s catch, and it looks like the ball was just shy of a full 10 yards. While these captures are of after the ball had been handled by the Browns’ center, the placements were equidistant to their respective lines, the 16 and the 6. It should’ve been at least a measurement by the officials, but as sometimes is the case, a 27-3 game is raced towards completion. Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy wanted to challenge, but he’d have needed to have done so before the snap of the missed throw.

A Jalen Tolbert penalty and sack on Dak Prescott made things rather tough against a ferocious defense so the Cowboys wound up punting. A nice return put the Browns in position to do damage, but they ran into some penalty issues themselves. Ultimately they settled for a field goal to draw the game’s first points. Instant Analysis: Prescott re-signing leaves Cowboys window open as perennial contenders for foreseeable future
Instant Analysis: Prescott re-signing leaves Cowboys window open as perennial contenders for foreseeable future reidhanson The saga is now finally over. After months of “will they or won’t they” the Cowboys inked their franchise quarterback to a new $240 million deal that will keep last season’s MVP runner up in Dallas for four more years. The move also keeps the Cowboys firmly entrenched as a playoff team for the foreseeable future. The Cowboys have been at a crossroads this offseason. Blessed with incredible talent at multiple key positions, their star power is the envy of all but a handful of teams. Unfortunately for them, the majority of that star power has also been on the hunt for new top-of-the-market contracts. Like a lot of successful businesses, the Cowboys, the most valuable professional sports franchise in the world, loves to make money but doesn’t love to spend money. The ideal of delivering market setting deal after market setting deal doesn’t particularly appeal to them and usually prompts a press conference lecture involving pie. It’s part of the reason why CeeDee Lamb’s negotiations dragged on until after the preseason and it also contributed as to why Prescott’s went all the way to the back half of the 11th hour. Lamb’s deal always felt like a forgone conclusion, but Prescott’s deal wasn’t ever so forgone. In Prescott’s previous deal, agent Todd France included a no trade and no franchise tag stipulation. It meant Prescott could walk free and clear this coming March if the Cowboys didn’t pony up acceptable terms. Critics of Prescott within the fanbase seemed to welcome a departure. Even though starting over at quarterback would potentially waste the best years of Dallas’ best players’ careers, there was bad blood in the fanbase and some people just wanted to move on. It’s somewhat understandable they didn’t want to pay a guy the most money if he wasn’t the best player. By their logic everyone should fall into place behind Patrick Mahomes. This type of thinking might follow basic logic, but it doesn’t fit the reality of the NFL. In today’s NFL, middle ground is hard to come by, especially in matters of contracts. With the salary cap growing year-over-year, the price of doing business escalates correspondingly. The highest paid QB is typically the most recently signed QB, not the highest performing QB. Prescott, coming off his best season as a pro, easily makes the case his best football is still ahead of him. Wins are a team stat, but QB play determines winners and losers more than any other position in the NFL. Not just any QB will do. Without strong play under center, the Cowboys have little chance of succeeding in the regular season, let alone the postseason. It doesn’t matter how talented the roster is, bus drivers very rarely lead their teams to the ultimate goal. Obviously, Prescott will have to play better than he played against Green Bay last postseason but Dallas’ playoff drudging of the Tom Brady-led Buccaneers shows he can. Besides, the entire Cowboys roster has had issues performing in the postseason. It spans throughout Mike McCarthy’s four-year term as head coach and back through the Jason Garrett era as well. The issue is bigger than just one QB or just one coach. It’s a team issue. What Prescott’s retainment means is the Cowboys will have a seat at the table for the foreseeable future. Since 2016, the Cowboys have either finished first or second in the division when Prescott’s at the helm. They are perennial contenders despite constant coaching and personnel churn. He makes the retainment of Lamb worth it. He makes the Cowboys investment in their offensive line worth it. He allows the Cowboys to go cheap at running back and the coaching staff to open up the extended version of the playbook where the only limit is their imagination. Even Prescott critics must see starting over at QB could be a disaster for the Cowboys. Keeping Prescott in Dallas ensures the Cowboys remain in the playoff mix and for the foreseeable future, Super Bowl contenders. Cowboys at Browns: Writer predictions for season opener
Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images Our writers have submitted their predictions for Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys game. At long last, football has returned! The NFL kicked off its new season with close games on both Thursday and Friday, but Sunday marks the return of America’s Team as the Cowboys take on the Browns in Cleveland. Both teams made the playoffs last year before getting blown out by a pair of young superstar quarterbacks. The quest to get back to the postseason begins with this matchup, in which the Cowboys are a 2.5 point underdog. Can they come away with a win? Let’s see what our writers expect to happen. When Cleveland has the ball Protect Caelen Carson The Cowboys will be starting rookie Caelen Carson at cornerback opposite Trevon Diggs, though not necessarily by choice. The move comes as a result of DaRon Bland’s injury, suffered in training camp. Carson, a fifth-round pick, impressed in camp and the preseason, earning the right to be the next man up, but he’s still the next man up. The Browns have one of the more formidable receiving corps out there, featuring Amari Cooper and Jerry Jeudy. It’s unclear if new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer plans to have his cornerbacks follow specific receivers or stick to one side of the field – he’s done both in the past – but limiting Carson’s exposure to these two receivers has to be priority number one. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski will surely look to target Carson, but Zimmer needs to help his rookie out a little bit in his NFL debut. When Dallas has the ball Quick hitters One of the features of the West Coast principles that Mike McCarthy infused into this Cowboys offense last year was a quicker trigger for Dak Prescott. That led to the quarterback averaging 2.71 seconds per attempt, eighth-fastest among starting quarterbacks last year. He’ll need to continue that trend in this one, if not speeding it up even more, as the Browns feature an elite pass rush. They finished in the top 10 last year in pressure rate, sacks, and quarterback knockdown rate. Cleveland also played the second-highest rate of Cover 1 (press man coverage) last year, something Prescott thrived against. If Prescott can find the open receiver quickly, he can thwart this defense’s strengths and lead the offense to a successful first day of the new year. Dak Prescott was the NFL’s best quarterback against Cover-1 last season. Here are five examples of him shredding it. The Browns, who played the second-highest rate of Cover-1 last season behind the Cowboys (go figure), should be aware. pic.twitter.com/9HcTszfgqD — Doug Farrar ✍ (@NFL_DougFarrar) September 6, 2024 Now onto the predictions from your BTB writers… Tom Ryle: I’m in agreement that the Cowboys are asking a lot of rookies and a near rookie in DeMarvion Overshown, and they are going to take a bit to get things together. The Browns seem to be on the rise, while it is hard to see Dallas as heading up after their typical passive approach to roster building. Cowboys lose, 17-16. Matt Holleran: I think this game is going to have a similar feel to Dallas’ opener back in 2016 against the Giants. If you remember, that was a low-scoring game that came down to the wire. Dallas’ offense wasn’t able to get in field goal range, aided by a Terrance Williams game-ending mistake, and they ultimately lost 20-19. It’s not uncommon for offenses to struggle early on, and I think both Dallas and Cleveland will come out a bit rusty on offense this Sunday. Just like 2016, the Cowboys get the ball back trailing by one score late, but they ultimately suffer the same fate. The Browns’ defense holds giving them a big-time Week One win. Give me Cleveland, 19-17. Jess Haynie: I think Mike Zimmer’s going to have fun terrorizing Deshaun Watson and that makeshift Browns offensive line. While I am worried about the Cowboys’ rust on offense, they have the better QB this weekend and the more complete team overall. Cowboys win, 30-20. Brandon Loree: Another season of fun is about to begin! The Cowboys’ trip to Cleveland to face each other in Week 1 is intriguing on many levels. Both teams have an alien on defense who’s in the race for Defensive Player of the Year, a fan base who expects more from their quarterback, and the teams looking to start the season on a high note after disappointing losses in the postseason. The Cowboys will face a daunting defense headlined by one of the best secondaries in the NFL. Luckily, Dallas has CeeDee Lamb back in the fold to pick apart their man coverage. Speaking of man, Dak Prescott earned the highest completion percentage (66.0%) and the 2nd-most yards per pass attempt (8.8) against man coverage among qualified quarterbacks last season. Conversely, the Browns defense allowed the lowest completion percentage (45.8%) and 3rd-lowest yards per pass attempt (5.6) in man coverage last season. Something has to give. I think the game will be close, but I’ll give Cleveland the advantage this week because it is at home and wins 20-17. Mike Poland: Deshaun Watson hasn’t played an NFL game since Week 9 of last year. He has to hold back the tide and deliver against a defense that ranked third in interceptions last year and eighth in sacks. Watson has 14 touchdowns in the last two seasons while Dak led the league last year with 36. Cowboys win this one 24-21 – thank you Brandon Aubrey. Dana Bartholomew: There are just too many questions about how this Cowboys team will look this season to confidently pick them over the Browns. There are four rookie draft picks that will be starting on Sunday and while I believe they will end up being great contributors in the future, they will have a very big challenge in their NFL debut. Most notably, Cooper Beebe and Tyler Guyton will be battling against one of

Report: There is ‘small chance’ Dak Prescott and Dallas Cowboys agree to extension on Sunday
Photo by Harry How/Getty Images There is reportedly a ‘small chance’ that Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys get a deal done before the season starts. The Dallas Cowboys begin their season on Sunday afternoon and when they do it could change the nature of contract negotiations between the team and Dak Prescott. It is well within the realm of possibility that Dak and the Cowboys could agree to terms at some point during the season, but history tells us that the season’s start means that talks have a lesser chance of reaching fruition. Given that Prescott will, at least as of things at this moment, be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, much stands to change. Obviously we have made it this far without a deal coming together, but we are basically in the eleventh hour of things and according to ProFootballTalk there is a “small chance” that something gets done before kickoff in Cleveland. Now, a night before the Week 1 game between Dallas and Cleveland, there’s a “small chance” it gets done. That’s the latest word from a source with knowledge of the situation. And if it’s going to be officially done before 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday, they’ll need to get an agreement in principle ASAFP, work out the language, type up the paperwork, and get Dak’s signature on the bottom line before he pivots to football mode. Week 1 isn’t a real deadline. But if the two parties regard it that way, it is. The Cowboys are obviously well in game mode so if a deal is going to happen it would stand to reason that the majority of work is done with some final touches being put in place. For what it’s worth, on Saturday morning ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted there was still a “gap”, but perhaps the day bridged it.
Cowboys lose to Browns on Brandon Aubrey missed field goal in Madden simulation
Madden believes the Dallas Cowboys are going to start the season off with a loss. The Dallas Cowboys begin their season on Sunday afternoon against the Cleveland Browns and if oddsmakers are correct then they are going to lose. This game is tied for (at the time of this writing at least) the lowest over/under of the Week 1 slate so it is not expected to produce a ton of points. Within that, the Browns are technically favored to produce more as they are the favorites. We all know how poorly the Cowboys have done in season openers in recent memory that were not against the New York Giants. This Browns team boasts one of the better defenses in the NFL, so does Dallas for what it’s worth, so it does feel a bit like a coin flip proposition. As we do every week around here we have run a simulation in the latest installment of the popular Madden franchise, this year’s is Madden 25, to see how the video game believes the Cowboys will do. This week Madden has Dallas losing 18-17. If this simulation were to play out in actuality then we would be in for quite the long week as Dak Prescott threw a critical interception late in the game that set Cleveland up with what ultimately became winning momentum. While Prescott did get the Cowboys in field goal range for a last-second victory, Madden had Brandon Aubrey miss a 59-yarder as time expired. In the past we have had Madden results that were all over the place relative to what actually happened with the Cowboys themselves. We have had the game correctly predict things down to the exact score and also be totally wrong. We’ll see what this week brings.
