The Cowboys’ backs were up against the proverbial wall heading into Week 9’s trip to Atlanta. They fell flat, never coming nearly as close to winning the game as the 27-21 final might make it seem. The injury to quarterback Dak Prescott was, of course, the story of the game, only the latest example of the writing on that aforementioned wall. The 2024 squad appears to be doomed beyond reach. Too bad, because there were actually faint glimmers of hope to be found here and there at the Falcons’ jewel of a stadium. Dallas actually had some semblance of a ground game, although Prescott suffering a hamstring injury while using his legs would end up being the social-media punchline. And somewhere in an alternate reality, Rico Dowdle’s tip-drill touchdown catch was the kind of play to perhaps turn around a season on the brink. But fourth downs proved to be the death knell for Dallas, both on offense and defense, and provided much of the bad and the ugly that summed up this contest. When the chains had to be moved or a stop had to be made- when it mattered the most– the Cowboys simply didn’t have what was required. It was the story of Week 9… and could end up being a summary of the season. Here’s our look at the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Dirty Bird defeat. [affiliatewidget_smgtolocal] Good: Cowboys get doubly lucky on Dowdle’s TD grab Dowdle’s third touchdown reception of the season was one he’ll remember. The running back kept himself open for a scrambling Dak Prescott and then, while falling, tapped the ball into the air once and then twice before it it dropped into his grasp as he lay on the Mercedes-Benz end-zone turf. It made for a nice capper on Dowdle’s day: 12 carries for 75 yards to lead the team and five receptions on six targets for 32 yards and the highlight-reel score. But the juggling circus catch required more than just a fortuitous bounce or two of the ball. Replays show that left tackle Tyler Guyton could have easily been called for a hold on (and subsequent takedown of) Falcons lineman Grady Jarrett. That he wasn’t- given Guyton’s penalty proclivity- and the touchdown was allowed to stand was about the only bit of good luck Dallas had on the day. Bad: 4th-down defense’s open-door policy The Cowboys defense is scaring absolutely no one, not even when it’s do-or-die. Dallas opponents have attempted to convert on fourth down a staggering 16 times though eight games, and they’ve been successful on better than two out of every three attempts. Faced with a 4th-and-4 just past midfield in the first quarter, the Falcons never hesitated on the call and picked up 10 yards with ease. (They were already lining up to go for it when Jourdan Lewis needed an extra moment after third down.) So when they came up against 4th-and-3 on their next possession, it was a no-brainer. The Cowboys needed a timeout- this time to let a dinged-up Trevon Diggs gather himself- and when Atlanta finally snapped the ball, they pounced. Diggs got caught up in horrible position, giving up a 36-yard walk-in touchdown to Darnell Mooney. Atlanta was a perfect 2-for-2 on 4th downs on Sunday. Ugly: Terrible fake punt fails, nearly backfires big-time Less than two minutes into the second half, instead of marching downfield to take the lead, the ineffective Cowboys were already staring at fourth down from inside their own 40. Yet special teams coordinator John Fassel dialed up a fake. Punter Bryan Anger wound up and lobbed a painfully long throw outside the numbers to C.J. Goodwin, who had fallen down on his route. The ball hit Falcons cornerback Natrone Brooks right in the hands; he would have likely had a pick-six had he held onto it. (As it was, Atlanta went on to score a touchdown on their short-field possession.) Fassel revealed Monday that he was the one who recommended the fake- over Mike McCarthy’s call for a punt- and inexplicably said he doesn’t regret the decision. Good: Dak finding his legs again (until…) The easy punch line was there for the taking as soon as Prescott’s hamstring injury was announced. Yes, Cowboys fans had been pleading with the quarterback to get back to using his legs to make plays, especially this year with the running backs struggling. He finally did on Sunday… and boom. But the unfortunate injury came as the 31-year-old was evading a sack, not taking off on some half-baked naked bootleg or trying to hero-race a track-star DB downfield to the pylon instead of just stepping out safely. It could have happened even without a “run, Dak, run” element to the gameplan. And up until the otherwise routine Kaden Elliss sack, Prescott was making renewed and excellent use of his wheels. He ended the day with just just three carries for 30 yards, but his 22-yarder midway through the second quarter was the team’s longest of 2024. It was fun while it lasted. Sigh. Bad: 4th-down offense is, in fact, offensive There’s aggressive playcalling… and then there are just dumb play calls. The Cowboys manage to do both with regularity when it’s fourth down. The team has gone for it 17 times this season; only four clubs have gone for more. But Dallas has converted just 35% of those tries; that ranks 27th out of the league’s 32 teams. The Cowboys were a dreadful 1-of-5 on fourth-down attempts versus the Falcons, but none (not even the atrocious fake punt) was more embarrassing than CeeDee Lamb’s jet sweep that crashed and burned for a three-yard loss. The play call fooled no one- especially the Atlanta defense- and it not only wasted the Cowboys’ sole takeaway of the day, it set up Kirk Cousins & Co. at midfield, giving them a head start on a touchdown drive that stretched their lead to double digits. Ugly: The wrong kind
Cowboys vs Eagles: Philadelphia has plenty of statistical success in their Week 9 win
Bill Streicher-Imagn Images Taking a look at the Eagles’ side of things. Saquon Barkley already among Eagles elite with franchise milestone – Alexis Chassen, BleedingGreenNation.com Saquon Barkley is already paying dividends for Philadelphia. Everyone will continue talking about Saquon Barkley’s heroic reverse-hurdle against the Jaguars, but the RB had another reason to celebrate after the game on Sunday. After just a short time with the Eagles, Barkley has already cemented himself among the greats, hitting 1,000 total yards of offense in just eight games. The running back is only the third player in franchise history to hit that mark. The only other Eagles players to achieve this feat are LeSean McCoy and Brian Westbrook, both of whom were in attendance for Barkley’s big day. Westbrook was at the kelly green game to help induct McCoy into the Eagles Hall of Fame, and they both got a glimpse of the heir to the rushing throne in Philly. Barkley has been dominant ever since his first game as an Eagle, and has given the offense an identity. Lane Johnson told reporters that he and other offensive lineman told coaches during the bye week that they should be more of a rushing offense. With guys like A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the Eagles have been pretty committed to the passing game, but Barkley added a whole other element and dimension to the group. There’s still more than enough time for Barkley to hit 2,000 offensive yards this season, and to break countless other franchise records along the way. In Roob’s Stats: What the Eagles did for the first time since 1950 – Reuben Frank, NBC Sports Philadelphia The Eagles’ win over Jacksonville saw plenty of statistical history made. The Eagles have done something over the last three weeks that they hadn’t done in 74 years. And their linebackers did something they hadn’t done in 25 years. And Jalen Hurts did something that only one other Eagles quarterback has ever done. We’ve got stats. Oh yeah. 1. Saquon Barkley continues to put up mind-blowing numbers and he continues to do it in mind-blowing fashion. Let’s start with some Saquon stats: 1A. Barkley has rushed for 443 yards over the last three weeks, the most by an Eagle in any three-game span in 76 years. Late in the 1948 season, Steve Van Buren rushed for 143 yards in a win over the Giants at the Polo Grounds, 137 yards in a win over the Boston Yanks at Shibe Park and 171 vs. Washington, also at Shibe Park. 1B. Barkley now has 925 rushing yards, 1,071 scrimmage yards, eight touchdowns and a 5.9 rushing average. The only other players in NFL history to put up those numbers through eight games are Jim Brown in 1958 and 1963 and Adrian Peterson in 2007. 2. Let’s talk about the quarterback: 2A. Jalen Hurts’ passer ratings the last four games have been 126.1, 119.3, 132.5 and 132.3. He’s the first quarterback in Eagles history with four straight games over 119 and only the 13th in NFL history. Among the others are Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, Jim Kelly, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. 4. How about an insane linebacker stat? In the second quarter Sunday, Zack Baun became the first Eagles linebacker with an interception in their last 49 games, since Alex Singleton picked off Mike Glennon in the Eagles’ 34-10 win over the Giants at the Linc. In the fourth quarter, Nakobe Dean became the second Eagles linebacker with an interception in their last 49 games, since Alex Singleton picked off Mike Glennon in the Eagles’ 34-10 win over the Giants at the Linc. This was the first time in 24 years the Eagles got two interceptions in the same game from linebackers. It happened in the 2000 season opener, the Pickle Juice Game, when Carlos Emmons and Jeremiah Trotter had interceptions in the Eagles’ 41-14 win at Texas Stadium. Trotter had a 27-yard pick-6 off Troy Aikman early in the second quarter and then Emmons picked off Randall Cunningham in the second quarter after Randall replaced Aikman (who was 0-for-5, sacked four times and threw a pick). The Eagles had gone 425 consecutive games without getting two INTs from their linebackers. Eagles announce roster move ahead of Week 10 vs Cowboys – Kelsey Kramer, AtoZSports.com Philly signed a player named Dallas ahead of playing Dallas. The Philadelphia Eagles made some roster moves ahead of their Week 10 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The team released offensive lineman Braeden Daniels from the practice squad and filled that void by signing linebacker Dallas Gant. Gant comes to Philly knowing a familiar face in Eagles’ first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell as the two played together at Toledo. An Ohio native, Gant initially went undrafted out of Toledo following the 2024 NFL Draft and was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings where he spent the first half of the season on the practice squad before being waived last week. Before entering the NFL, Gant played six seasons at the collegiate level, including four at Ohio State and two at Toledo. In his last two years as a Rocket, he earned back-to-back first-team All-MAC honors and led his team in tackles with 232, including 23.5 tackles for loss, one sack, an interception, seven pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. The Eagles could be without linebacker Ben VanSumeren this week after he suffered a concussion in Week 9’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. That means Gant will provide extra emergency depth behind Nakobe Dean and Zach Baun as the Birds get ready to take on their biggest NFC East rival.
DeMarvion Overshown has been one of the few bright spots for the Cowboys in 2024
Photo by Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images DeMarvion Overshown is having an impressive season for the Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys are a mess right now. They sit at 3-5 with three consecutive losses. On top of that, they continue to be rattled with injuries as quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb got banged up against the Atlanta Falcons, with the former set to miss several weeks with a hamstring issue. There has been one player that’s been a bright spot for the Cowboys. Defensively, as a whole, they’re not a good unit. However, second-year linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is playing good football. Overshown had his rookie campaign cut short by a torn ACL. Naturally, the Cowboys were patient with his rehab, but it was clear even in the preseason, even in limited action, that Overshown was ready to show the potential that had everyone buzzing about him in 2023. He got right to work in the Cowboys Week 1 win over the Cleveland Browns. Overshown was arguably the best defensive player on the Cowboys as he racked up a team high 11 tackles (one tackle for loss), a sack, and two quarterback hits. Surprisingly, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer went away from Overshown in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints, and he only logged 18 snaps and produced four tackles. Ever since, the former third-rounder has started every game and hasn’t logged less than six tackles in any game. Although the Cowboys didn’t win last Sunday, Overshown, again, had a case for being the team’s best player on defense. He put up seven tackles with three tackles being for a loss, which is a season high for Overshown. Two months into the season, Overshown’s play isn’t exciting just because he’s producing. It’s how he’s looked doing it. Yes, the Cowboys run defense is still bad overall as it’s ranked 31st in the league. However, Overshown continues to show the ability to flow sideline to sideline with no hesitation and speed. He shoots through gaps extremely fast, and he attacks as soon as he reads a play, which is very key against the run. That’s the type of guy you want on the second level of your defense. Now, if the Cowboys got better play on the interior of their defensive line, that would keep offensive lineman from getting to the second level and putting a hat on Overshown, and he would have free reign to roam and make plays. You won’t see it registered as run defense, but that’s exactly what this is from DeMarvion Overshown. Quick dump = quasi-run. Speed is worthless without IQ and form. #Cowboys pic.twitter.com/WIfdInas57 — Patrik [No C] Walker (@VoiceOfTheStar) September 9, 2024 If anything can come from the ashes of the Cowboys 2024 season, it’s that DeMarvion Overshown is starting to find his groove at LB.#DallasCowboys pic.twitter.com/KNCIku0wOv — Brandon Loree (@Brandoniswrite) November 4, 2024 For the season, Overshown is second on the Cowboys with 56 tackles. He also has two sacks, five tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble. This is exactly what Dallas could have hoped for after his ACL injury. Veteran Eric Kendricks is the alpha dog in the linebacker room. However, he’ll likely be a one-year rental, which makes Overshown the perfect kind of player to build around on the Cowboys defense for the foreseeable future along with All-Pro Micah Parsons. Speed, the ability to read and diagnose plays, and an aggressive play style are all a part of Overshown’s tool bag. He’s already a fantastic player, and he’s only going to improve as time goes on.
Cowboys release 10-year veteran DT, former 2nd-round pick
Cowboys release 10-year veteran DT, former 2nd-round pick angeltorres Dallas churned the bottom of their roster today with a few moves, including a trade, and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips became the latest casualty after they released the 10-year veteran. The move doesn’t actually open a roster spot as Phillips had been on IR with a disputed injury. The Cowboys acquired Phillips from the Giants along with a 2026 seventh-round draft pick in exchange for a sixth-rounder in 2026. Phillips played in the season’s first two games before landing on injured reserve. The Cowboys placed him on IR because of a wrist injury, something Phillips disputed when he first talked to the media. Phillips spent a stint on injured reserve last December as a member of the Buffalo Bills. He had signed with the Giants as a free agent but was traded to Dallas during training camp. The Cowboys have a desperate need for defensive tackle help ranking near the bottom of all rush defense metrics and moving on from the veteran is yet another stain on this front office and their curious way of conducting business. According to Phillips’s Instagram account, he appears headed back to Buffalo. With one open roster spot, Dallas must make another move if they intend to bring back two defensive starters. Phillips was the first domino to fall and another name must be moved. The search continues in Dallas for capable interior lineman as another name has been scratched from the list. Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles, 2024 NFL Week 10
Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles, 2024 NFL Week 10 Keep track of everything related to Cowboys vs. Eagles in NFL Week 10 as Dallas hosts Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. Contributors: RJ Ochoa The Dallas Cowboys are back at home this week after over a month away. That time period included the bye so it wasn’t purely road games, but nevertheless the lights will be on at AT&T Stadium on Sunday. Hopefully they will be within the Cowboys team as well as Dallas is looking for their first win at home this season. It will not be easy against the Philadelphia Eagles, especially because Dak Prescott will be missing the contest with a hamstring injury. This leaves Cooper Rush to hold the fort down and he may even have to do so without CeeDee Lamb. Rico Dowdle will surely be depended on and on the other side of things DeMarvion Overshown may have to singlehandedly will the group to legitimacy. On the Philly side of things Jalen Hurts has begun to find himself as of late and Saquon Barkley is having quite the debut season with his new team. DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown remain prolific options in the passing game. Needless to say the game will be quite difficult for the home side. Here’s our stream for everything you need to know about it all. We will update it throughout the week to include all relevant news regarding the game, injuries and everything else.
Cowboys 2024 rookie report: The rookies have another tough day
Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images What did you make of the Cowboys rookies against the Atlanta Falcons? It was a bad day for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The entire team looks to be struggling and the result of a roster that’s underperforming was seen against the Atlanta Falcons. How did the rookie class play last Sunday? Let’s dive in and take a look. OT Tyler Guyton Guyton looked to be on the up after a fairly good game against San Francisco. This week he regressed again, but we’re talking one piece of an offensive line that truly struggled against the Falcons. He missed time after the second half as he dealt with a neck strain. When he returned he rejoined the Cowboys offensive line unit that seemed to have no answer to a Falcons defensive line that was ranked last in the NFL in sacks and pressure rate. Dak Prescott was sacked twice in the first quarter and was having to deal with huge pressure throughout the game, even the touchdown to Rico Dowdle had Falcons defensive linemen swooping all around Dak. This was a hugely underwhelming performance from the Cowboys offensive line, Guyton included. DE Marshawn Kneeland Inactive/Did not play for this game. C Cooper Beebe Back to the offensive line and Beebe is in the same boat as Guyton here. He had his struggles with the rest of the line as they tried to hold back the tide. With both Zack Martin and Terence Steele to his right, the run game has nowhere to go. Martin and Steele are really struggling this season and last week’s performance from them both had a detrimental effect on Beebe. The rookie center allowed the most pressures against the Falcons, but Beebe was expecting to see extra pass rushing come his way from the Falcons system. This was just a bad day from the offensive line across the board. LB Marist Liufau The young linebacker played only five snaps on defense and record zero tackles. He did manage to force one quarterback hurry. CB Caelen Carson Carson had a large snap count this week, playing a total of 54 defensive snaps. Kirk Cousins went his way early and often in the game and found huge success. This was Carson’s first game playing since Week 3 and things went roughly for the Wake Forest defensive back. He allowed all eight targets to go for receptions and allowed a passer rating of 117.2. He did make seven tackles, which was second-most on the team last week, but he also led team in missed tackles with three. WR Ryan Flournoy Flournoy played 18 snaps and made one reception off one target that went for 13 yards. He also had 12 snaps on special teams. TE Brevyn Spann-Ford Spann-Ford played 15 snaps on offense and five of those snaps came as an extra blocker. He had zero receptions and was targeted zero times. S Emany Johnson Inactive/Did not play for this game. LB Brock Mogensen Inactive/Did not play for this game. DT Denzel Daxon Inactive/Did not play for this game
Irate Twitter users clown Cowboys, Jerry Jones for Jonathan Mingo deadline trade
The Dallas Cowboys have made a trade! Wait, the Cowboys gave up what? For who?! That’s about the extent of the reaction to the news that was first teased on Jerry Jones’ radio appearance Tuesday morning and was later fleshed out by reporters. The Cowboys have given up their 2025 fourth-round pick to acquire WR Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers. Dallas also brought back Carolina’s seventh rounder in the exchange. Fans, still disgruntled over seeing Amari Cooper net more compensation going from Houston to Buffalo than he did from Dallas to Houston, and the fourth-round pick for QB Trey Lance, and on and on and on, are understandably scratching their heads at this move made the same day they 3-5 Cowboys placed QB Dak Prescott on IR. The move led to some great tweets on X (formerly known as Twitter, and maybe again soon). Editor’s Note: We are aware that Twitter is having an issue with the content of their tweets showing up in articles.
Dallas Cowboys trade tracker: News, reports and rumors before Tuesday’s deadline
Photo by Ric Tapia/Getty Images We are tracking all trade notes and rumors surrounding the Dallas Cowboys ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. Tuesday is a big day across the United States as the NFL trade deadline officially arrives at 4:00pm ET (couldn’t help myself). In all seriousness, Tuesday marks the last opportunity for teams to make significant moves in the name of improving their odds of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at season’s end. Similarly, the day offers the last chance for teams to sell off assets in the name of accepting what fate handed them this season with eyes more focused and fixated on the future. The latter has never been a move the Dallas Cowboys have explored, but the former seems disconnected from their current reality. If and when anything does happen to, for or through the Cowboys on Tuesday we will make note of it here. This post will serve as our trade deadline tracker with all relevant news, information and rumors that you need to know. Buckle up. Here we go. Dallas Cowboys Trade Rumors TBD Notable Deadline Day Deals Across the NFL Early Tuesday morning the Detroit Lions struck a deal with the Cleveland Browns for edge rusher Za’Darius Smith (recall that Aidan Hutchinson was lost for the season when Detroit blew out Dallas). The Lions are sending a 2025 5th and a 2026 6th in exchange for Smith as well as a 2026 7th. This is important context if you wanted to consider the Cowboys trading away someone like DeMarcus Lawrence, although he is on injured reserve at the moment. Also on Tuesday morning the Cincinnati Bengals made a trade with the Chicago Bears for running back Khalil Herbert. Cincinnati gave up a 2025 7th to get him.
Cowboys news: Some players may return vs Eagles, but prepare for Cooper Rush at QB
Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images The latest Dallas Cowboys news is here. Cowboys’ Dak Prescott expected to miss several weeks, source says – Todd Archer, ESPN Cowboys fans are asking themselves if there will be anything left to play for when Dak Prescott is healthy again? Coach Mike McCarthy said the Cowboys were prepared to say only that Prescott will miss Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a right hamstring injury, although a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Prescott is expected to miss several weeks. Prescott is in the process of getting a second opinion, and once that information is finalized, the Cowboys could discuss the possibility of putting him on injured reserve. If they make that move, he would be out until Dec. 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The immediate focus is on the Eagles with Cooper Rush as the starting quarterback. “It really doesn’t change anything with us. Even speaking with Dak earlier, this is about the quarterback room. We’ve always invested all the time and energy into the quarterback, Dak, that has the football,” McCarthy said. “So now it’s Cooper’s turn, and Dak will be part of that process. We’ll rally around him and make sure that we do everything we can to make sure that he’s prepared. We’ll just keep going about it the way we’ve gone about it.” Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb has a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder after he was injured in the second half against the Falcons. Lamb has missed just one game in his career due to injury. He is also getting more evaluations, but McCarthy was optimistic. If Lamb plays against the Eagles, it will be with serious pain in his shoulder. He suffered his injury on a 10-yard reception in the second quarter against the Falcons. He continued to play but then landed on it again in the fourth quarter while trying for a diving catch in the end zone. Cowboys optimistic Micah Parsons will return this week – Charean Williams, Pro Football Talk The Cowboys desperately need a home win against a division rival, and having Micah Parsons back would go a long way. The Cowboys, though, are optimistic about getting another star player back this week. Edge rusher Micah Parsons “should be back” for Sunday’s game against the Eagles, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Parsons was diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain during the Cowboys’ victory over the Giants on Sept. 26. They did not put him on injured reserve, hoping he could return sooner than four games, with an off week in Week 7. Parsons, though, has missed four games. The Cowboys have missed him, with their other starting defensive end, DeMarcus Lawrence, also out. Lawrence is on injured reserve. Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott Will Be Available vs. Eagles After Disciplinary Benching – Andrew Peters, Bleacher Report Ezekiel Elliott will return for Week 10. “Zeke couldn’t make the trip,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on the pregame show for the team’s radio network (h/t Bell). “He was being punished. I know Zeke is the first to recognize the discipline involved in meetings.” Archer noted last week that Sunday was the first time Elliot had been a healthy scratch from the lineup in a game when the Cowboys’ playoff positioning has not been decided. Since returning to Dallas on a one-year deal after a year with the New England Patriots, Elliot hasn’t had the season he hoped for. He has just 149 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns and is on pace for a career-low in rushing yards. In his last season with the Cowboys in 2022, Elliot had 876 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, a much more productive version of himself than Dallas got this season. McCarthy reveals Cowboys’ QB rotation for Rush, Lance in absence of Dak – Patrik Walker, DallasCowboys.com The Cowboys have rallied around Cooper Rush and won games before, but with much more of a supporting cast than he’ll have starting Sunday against the Eagles. When the Week 10 battle gets underway on Sunday at AT&T Stadium, it’ll be Rush getting the nod as the starter, an expected decision by the Cowboys’ head coach. “Cooper has played really good football for us,” he said. “I think he’s 5-1 in his opportunities. Like I said, we have great confidence in him.” McCarthy went on to explain the true value of Rush to the organization and the locker room. “[That record] goes well beyond 5-1,” he said of his other veteran quarterback. “Cooper Rush is as respected as a backup quarterback as anyone since, I’d say Rich Gannon. He carries that type of credibility. He’s a great teammate. He’s someone you can see the young guys lean on — wicked smart, instinctive and does a great job when he runs the scout team. “He just does everything the right way. An excellent pro. There will be plenty of confidence in him. Distractions and a lack of attention to details wreck the Cowboys in Atlanta – LP Cruz, Blogging The Boys The Cowboys beat themselves as much as their third straight opponent also beat them in Sunday’s 27-21 loss. Diggs not wrapping up Kyle Pitts to force Atlanta into a punt Plenty of respect should go to Trevon Diggs for playing. He hadn’t practiced all week, and we discovered following last week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers that Diggs suffered a tear in his calf. Early in the contest, Diggs looked reasonably mobile. Still, Atlanta made it a point to challenge Diggs in coverage, but his tackling hurt the Cowboys. The Cowboys were down 7-3 and were gifted a 3rd-and-14 on defense after a flag was thrown on Falcons’ offensive tackle Jake Matthews for holding. Dallas managed to get Kirk Cousins to check it down short to Kyle Pitts, and all Diggs has to do is wrap up and not let Pitts get additional yards. Instead of making the fundamentally sound tackle, Diggs throws his shoulder into Pitts, who
Cowboys Headlines: Plan B at QB; Micah trending up, will Jerry buy or sell at trade deadline?
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott out at least 1 game as team evaluates hamstring injury :: Associated Press Link Prescott will definitely miss Week 10’s battle with Philadelphia, but beyond that, it’s still up in the air. Head coach Mike McCarthy said putting his 31-year-old quarterback on injured reserve is a possibility; that move would sideline Prescott at least four games. McCarthy stated that Cooper Rush would start next week, and Trey Lance will serve as Rush’s backup. ‘Something I’ve never felt’: Cowboys’ Prescott details Week 9 hamstring injury :: Cowboys Wire Link Prescott’s hamstring injury came on a scramble that resulted in a sack, but the quarterback didn’t realize something was wrong until he tried to step into his next throw. “I felt a pull, felt something I’ve never felt,” he said. Additionally, Prescott took a hit to his throwing hand during the game; he was seen receiving attention on it; blood was visible on the back of his hand near the pinkie. Parsons, Bland “in the same boat” on injury front :: The Mothership Link DaRon Bland is still waiting to make his season debut. Micah Parsons hasn’t played since Week 4. Both are trending in the right direction, though, as possibilities to practice this week and play on Sunday. Wednesday figures to be an important practice day for both All-Pros, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. Cowboys’ CeeDee Lamb gets encouraging news on shoulder injury :: Cowboys Wire Link A hard landing left Lamb shaken, but he played on. He re-aggravated the shoulder diving for a fourth-quarter deep ball. He was able to return and even caught a two-point conversion from Cooper Rush, who now looks to take over while Prescott rehabs. Don’t assume a dropoff in production, though: Lamb’s per-game numbers with Rush at the helm are nearly equal to his career stats. Early word is he has a sprained AC joint and may not miss any time at all. Cowboys’ Brandin Cooks hints at injury return to help CeeDee Lamb :: Athlon Sports Link Even if Lamb can soldier on, the return of Cooks would be a major help to the passing game under Rush. Cooks, who has been sidelined with a knee injury and on injured reserve since early October, seemed to suggest it could happen soon. “Go mode,” posted the receiver nicknamed The Archer, adding a bow-and-arrow emoji the morning after Sunday’s loss. Cowboys have an every 5-week jinx that just sidelined Dak Prescott :: Cowboys Wire Link Prescott is expected to miss multiple weeks with his hamstring injury, continuing a bizarre trend for the Cowboys. First DaRon Bland; then Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Brandin Cooks all on the same day; and now Prescott and maybe Lamb. All of those injuries occurred in five-week increments. (Beware on Week 14…) Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys moving forward following ‘team discipline situation’ :: Dallas Morning News Link Elliott was back in the building on Monday as he and the team appear ready to move on from the weekend’s discipline that left him at home as punishment for missing several team meetings recently. “Zeke will be available,’’ McCarthy said. “He went through everything today. But we did not have a sitdown today.’’ Jerry Jones seemed to harbor no hard feelings, either. “I wish that was all the blemishes I had on my background,” the owner joked. Cowboys-Falcons postgame analysis :: Cowboys Wire 6 expiring contracts the Dallas Cowboys should sell at the trade deadline :: SI.com Link It’s time to punt- on the 2024 season, and on players who might still be worth some draft capital before the trade deadline. Jourdan Lewis, Eric Kendricks, Osa Odighizuwa, and Zack Martin are among the Cowboys who may be able to best help the club in the long-term by being shipped off now. Jerry Jones on trade deadline: We’ll probably do a couple things this week :: ProFootballTalk Link “We’ll probably do a couple things this week,” the Cowboys owner said following Sunday’s loss. “I’m a long way from being dismayed about this team this year.” Saying he had “some things in the mix,” Jones hinted that the moves would be additions rather than subtractions. The trade deadline is Tuesday afternoon. Time for Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to make the bold move. And make this one hire (Opinion) :: Fort Worth Star-Telegram Link Jones has insisted he won’t make an in-season coaching change, but the situation seems unsalvageable. McCarthy is a good football coach, but he’s not the right guy for the Cowboys right now.
