The Dallas Cowboys were never supposed to be in this game, and they weren’t. Their Week 10 matchup against the high-flying Philadelphia Eagles was a tale of two opposite moving franchises. Dallas, losers of their last three games, have been besieged by injuries in 2024. Poor performance, dated play-calling, and criminal roster building combined for the perfect storm. For as low as the Cowboys were entering Week 10, Philadelphia was high. The Eagles, winners of their last five, have been thriving behind Kellen Moore and Saquan Barkley. The run-first offense has been a model of consistency in 2024 and when things break down, they just ask Jalen Hurts to tuck and run. On Sunday afternoon the Eagles ran for 187 yards on the ground. Barkley was generally kept in check much of the day, only posting 66 yards off 14 carries but Hurts made up for his modesty, posting 56 rushing yards and two touchdowns himself with a 0.77 EPA/rush (which led both teams). The Cowboys were largely stuck in neutral offensively. Not only did they commit five turnovers but starting quarterback Cooper Rush passed for just 45 yards on Sunday. That was not a typo. 45 yards. Hurts wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire through the air either. Even though the Cowboys were committed to stopping the run and offering up huge opportunities in their secondary, Hurts struggled to hit his targets. His 202 passing yards blew Rush out of the water, but it was hardly a passing day to brag about. Losing by the score of 34-6, Dallas has seemingly lost all hope of earning a postseason bid. They entered the week with just a 3 percent chance of making the playoffs, Week 10 was the nail in the coffin. Nasty turnovers, different results Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-Imagn Images The tale of the first half was sloppy play inside the 20s for both teams. Ezekiel Elliott fumbled the ball into the end zone for an EPA value of -6.4 and Rush fumbled a snap back inside his own 20 for an EPA value of -6.1. Hurts added sloppy play of his own, throwing an interception to Trevon Diggs in the end zone for a -6.1 EPA. He was later strip-sacked by Micah Parsons inside his own 20 for another turnover worth 6.1 EPA in the Cowboys’ direction. The primary difference between each enormous mistake is the Eagles were able to capitalize on the errors while Dallas just wasted their opportunities. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-Imagn Images It wasn’t surprising to see Mike McCarthy take a conservative approach with Rush starting at QB. Dallas’ suspect-at-best pass protection and their receiver corps’ season-long struggle with separation turned the Cowboys offense into a dink-and-dunk passing attack. McCarthy took some shots downfield but typically avoided them on late downs and other obvious passing situations. On first watch, Rush’s passes beyond the sticks only resulted in a 25 percent completion percentage. Dallas finished 3 for 14 on third downs with just four of their 11 total first downs coming through the air in Week 10. Micah Parsons movement Nov 10, 2024; Arlington, Texas, USA; Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons (11) rushes the passer in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at AT&T Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-Imagn Images Mike Zimmer has always been willing to move his top pass rusher around to create opportunities, but in Week 10 the stage was set for a more focused approach. The Eagles were once again starting Fred Johnson at left tackle, providing a prime opportunity for Parsons to feast. Unfortunately, it looked like business as usual for Parsons with him logging more snaps on the left side of the defense and less snaps on the right against the replacement LT, Johnson. Parsons still posted a successful afternoon, tallying two sacks, but if he would have focused on playing primarily right edge, he probably could have had more. (Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images) Linebacker Eric Kendricks has been a valuable player for Dallas in 2024. He’s provided veteran leadership and on-field accountability to a very undisciplined Cowboys defense. But Father Time is undefeated and playing in the open field and in coverage is not something Kendricks does well anymore. Marist Liufau, on the other hand, specializes in those facets of the game. The rookie linebacker flies to the ball, and though he makes mistakes, he offers an exciting future for the Cowboys LB corps. The time for snaps to swing in Liufau’s favor is now. Kendricks still has to play, but in situations likely to be passes, Zimmer should look to his rookie more often. Related articles . Mandatory Credit: Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images
Cowboys almost a touchdown underdog at home next week against the Texans
Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images The Cowboys are huge home underdogs against the in-state rival Texans. The Dallas Cowboys season has officially reached comatose stage. Not even the return of Micah Parsons could jolt the squad to life, although he and DeMarvion Overshown did everything they could to keep the team in the game. It wasn’t enough as the Cooper Rush-led offense was anemic and Dallas lost 34-6. The train doesn’t stop in the NFL, so the Cowboys will have to suit up again next week, this time a home date on Monday night with the Houston Texans. The Texans had a 6-3 record entering their game on Sunday night with the Detroit Lions. There are early odds already out on the Cowboys game with the Texans and as you might expect, Dallas are underdogs at home, a place they haven’t won at since the end of the 2023 regular season. FanDuel has the Cowboys as 6.5-point underdogs to the Texans, which at the moment feels too small of a spread. The offense under Cooper Rush was abysmal versus the Eagles, and even though the defense stabilized for a half, they couldn’t contain the deluge in the third quarter. If you had to bet, would anyone take the Cowboys to cover?
Dallas Cowboys down to Philadelphia Eagles as season implodes, 28-6 entering fourth
Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images There is only one quarter left for the Cowboys against the Eagles. 3rd Quarter The Eagles began the half by receiving the ball and amazingly the Cowboys pitched a three and out for the first time on the day (they did generate a turnover earlier in a drive earlier in the game). ESPN’s Todd Archer noted it was the first time since Week 1 that Dallas did not allow points to be scored on an opponent’s first possession of the second half. It was more of the same for the Cowboys offense as they went three and out themselves. The AT&T Stadium crowd did not seem too pleased. Soon enough the Eagles were back in the endzone. Such is life in this current moment for the team that we all know and love. Soon enough, I am not copy-pasting I promise you, the Eagles were back in the endzone once more. After having success through a number of people on the ground it was Jalen Hurts who took it in himself for his second rushing touchdown of the day. But wait! It was only for two plays. Seriously. It really did feel like trolling from the Cowboys, but who knows what it was. Hilariously, Cooper Rush fumbled soon after and the Eagles took over as the third quarter ended. Number 7 picked off Jalen Hurts in the endzone. It was one of the prettiest interceptions you will ever see. TREVON DIGGS INT (via @NFL) pic.twitter.com/C7I9o1jiBs — Blogging The Boys (@BloggingTheBoys) November 10, 2024 Another three and out ultimately followed for the offense, though. It was tough sledding early on for the Cowboys offense. It kept feeling like at some point the Eagles would pounce, but that time was at least delayed. The Cowboys defense stood tall and Micah Parsons even got involved with his first sack since returning to keep Philadelphia at bay. The Cowboys responded by putting together their best-feeling drive in some time. It was aided by a few penalties which is important context, but Cooper Rush was staying calm and collected in the face of chaos. He even helped pick up a fourth down by way of a quarterback sneak. Despite Rico Dowdle having success on the drive in question the Cowboys handed the ball to Ezekiel Elliott near the goal line and he fumbled. Pain. Dallas ultimately had to settle for a field goal and discussion around the sun reared its ugly head once more. CeeDee Lamb appeared to lose a ball in it… this is what he was staring at. If it is not obvious that was good enough for a touchdown to effectively close out the half. 1st Quarter The Dallas Cowboys won the toss and as they have more often than not this season when they have done so… they took the ball. This disposition has yet to work out for the Cowboys this year and such was the case once more. Dallas went 3 and out and didn’t even burn up 2 minutes of game clock in the process. It seemed like the Eagles were going to move down to score rather easily, but Carl Lawson helped stop a drive that DeMarvion Overshown fully took the life out of. Jalen Hurts capped it off with the Eagles’ signature play at the goal line. KaVontae Turpin’s return right after helped set the Cowboys up with promising field position at their own 40-yard line. Ultimately the endzone remained unconquered territory, but Dallas did get close enough for Brandon Aubrey to boot a 46-yard field goal and put points on the board. Promising Cowboys LB leaves Eagles game from non-contact injury
Promising Cowboys LB leaves Eagles game from non-contact injury K.D. Drummond One of the few bright spots from the 2024 season has been the play of first-year linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. The University of Texas product missed his entire rookie season due to a summer ACL injury, but has largely looked unaffacted in his return. During Sunday’s game against the Eagles, the first since the return of edge rush extraordinaire Micah Parsons, Overshown has been used to pressure the quarterback. The results have been electric, with the heat-seeking missile securing two of the Cowboys’ five first-half sacks. But in the second half, the mood has soured. During the Eagles’ third drive of the third quarter, Overshown fell to the ground with a non-contact injury. Through less than three quarters, Overshown has 11 tackles along with his two sacks, and he’s been the most impactful player on the defense that has tried as hard as possible to keep their team competitive while the offense sputters embarrassingly almost every time they’ve been on the field. Dallas has lost a fumble in the red zone and also failed to convert two other opportunities, settling for field goals. With the score now 28-6, hearing the extent of Overshown’s injury may be the only thing yet to be decided in the contest. Is AJ Brown playing today? Injury news update for Eagles wide receiver
Is AJ Brown playing today? Injury news update for Eagles wide receiver K.D. Drummond The Eagles’ passing game has relied a great deal on one A.J. Brown over the last several seasons. In 2022, Brown 88 passes for 1,496 yards while scoring 11 touchdowns. He followed that up with 106 receptions in 2023, again approaching 1,500 receiving yards and adding another seven scores. Things have not been that smooth for Brown thus far in 2024, and injuries are to blame. After missing four games early in the season with a hamstring injury, Brown has returned to diminishing returns. And then last week, Brown exited the club’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars with a knee injury he didn’t return from. Will he be able to play against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10? The answer appears to be yes. Brown was limited in practice on Wednesday but has been a full participant both Thursday and Friday and surprisingly carries no injury designation into the game. All signs look like Brown will get another shot at playing against the Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs. The two did not get to face off against each other last season, as Diggs tore his ACL too early in the season to see Brown in Week 9 or Week 14. Back in 2022, Brown had 11 receptions on 16 targets in two contests against Diggs and company. Those 11 catches were good for 170 yards and a score. Cowboys vs Eagles: 3 bold predictions for Sunday’s matchup
Scott Galvin-Imagn Images Here are our bold predictions for this week’s matchup between the Cowboys and Eagles. The Dallas Cowboys are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they return home to host the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles. Things can’t get much worse for the Cowboys, so we’ll see if they can pull a rabbit out of their hat on Sunday and keep this game competitive. Before the two teams square off, here are three bold predictions for the matchup. Photo by Sam Hodde/Getty Images 1) Trey Lance scores the second rushing touchdown of his NFL career When the news broke this week about the severity of Dak Prescott’s hamstring injury, the 2024 Cowboys’ competitive window closed. Even with a healthy Prescott, the Cowboys didn’t have a great shot to make the playoffs. Without him, they have no chance. Even in a lost season, in Prescott’s absence the Cowboys will need to find ways to move the ball on offense. At this point in his career, it’s pretty clear Cooper Rush isn’t the type of quarterback that can be the sole reason you win games. Rush needs a solid ground game and a good defense behind him to succeed, two things the Cowboys currently lack. Dallas will need to use some creativity on offense to help offset the drop in talent from Prescott to Rush. One way they could do this is by finding ways to get 24-year-old quarterback Trey Lance involved. Lance didn’t do a lot of things all that well during the preseason, but he did have success running the football. The former third-overall pick is a great athlete and he consistently showed off his impressive ability to get outside the pocket and take off and run if nothing was available to him. This is why you don’t give up on Trey Lance. His ability to be a game changer is CLEARLY THERE. He made these defenders with angles look like they were running in place. pic.twitter.com/mBY1xUEo7o — Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) August 24, 2024 With many calling for the Cowboys to give Lance some playing time, Jerry Jones spoke publicly this week about the Cowboys potentially using him in some specific packages moving forward. The coaches might not like this, but Jerry Jones on Trey Lance to @1053thefan: “Oh there is a window for Trey Lance. There’s packages that we can work on … Let me be clear that’s not just to get Lance some playtime. That’s to bring to the table some offense for us.” — Todd Archer (@toddarcher) November 8, 2024 The Cowboys finally show some creativity on offense this week and it comes in the form of using Trey Lance as a runner. The quarterback breaks a 25+ yard run and goes the distance, scoring the second rushing touchdown of his NFL career. Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images 2) Eagles consistently gash the Cowboys on the ground, recording their second 250-yard rushing day of the season If there is one thing the Eagles do well on offense it’s run the football. Eight games into the season, Philadelphia is top five in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and Rush EPA. Saquon Barkley, who the Eagles signed from the rival New York Giants this offseason, has been healthy and playing arguably the best football of his career. The 27-year-old running back leads the league with an average of 116 rushing yards per game and is top 10 among qualified running backs in EPA/Rush and Explosive Rush percentage. Barkley is on pace to shatter his career-highs in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns and has proven to be the X-Factor the Eagles were missing on offense. This week the Eagles go up against a Cowboys’ defense that is one of the worst units against the run in the entire league. According to Rush EPA (0.093), Dallas is the worst run defense in the NFL this season. When facing good competition, the Cowboys have been consistently dominated on the ground. The Ravens, Lions, and 49ers have all had their way with the Cowboys running the football. The Eagles will follow suit and have another dominant day on the ground. Barkley and the Eagles’ running backs are the stars of the game as Philadelphia rushes for over 250 yards in a game for the second time this season. Brett Davis-Imagn Images 3) Jalen Brooks scores his first NFL touchdown With CeeDee Lamb a bit banged up, the Cowboys will need to feature some of their young receivers more prominently in this game. 24-year-old wideout Jalen Brooks will likely see much more playing time if Lamb is only able to play a limited amount of snaps. After high expectations coming into the year, Brooks has had a bit of a slow start to the season. The former seventh-round pick has caught just seven passes for 103 yards and has four games where he has recorded one or no receptions. This week, Brooks will do something he’s never done in his NFL career. With the game slipping away in the second half, Brooks hauls in a 37-yard reception, recording his first NFL touchdown and keeping Dallas within striking distance.
Cowboys news: Micah Parsons is reportedly a go for the Eagles game
Andrew Dieb-Imagn Images Your Sunday morning Cowboys news. Cowboys LB Micah Parsons to return after 4-game absence-Todd Archer, ESPN The Cowboys will get one of their premier players back in their lineup. Micah Parsons will make his return to the Dallas Cowboys’ defense Sunday against the Philadelphia, sources told ESPN Saturday. Parsons missed the past four games with a high left ankle sprain suffered in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys’ Week 4 win against the New York Giants. He was able to take part in three practices during the week on a limited basis and was officially listed as questionable. Despite the prolonged absence, Parsons still leads the Cowboys in quarterback pressures (21) and is two off the team lead in sacks, currently held by DeMarcus Lawrence with three. Lawrence, with a midfoot sprain, has also missed the past four games. Asked Wednesday whether he would see a full allotment of snaps if active Sunday, Parsons said, “Once I’m playing, I’m playing. That’s just the competitor in me. I was banged up plenty of times and I’m just like once I’m competing, I’m competing. It’s hard to restrain that.” The Cowboys, however, are expected to keep a close eye on his work during the game. Parsons played in 85% of the defensive snaps in the first four games of the season. He was credited with 18 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss and 1 pass deflection. Dak Prescott injury update: Cowboys QB likely to undergo season-ending surgery on hamstring – Jordan Dajani, CBS Sports It’s looking very likely that Dak Prescott’s season is done. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a partially torn hamstring in the Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. He was originally expected to miss several weeks, but now reportedly faces to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. Prescott is expected to undergo season-ending surgery on his hamstring, with a final decision coming early next week, CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reports. Prescott was not placed on injured reserve Saturday, which led many to wonder if he would miss more than four weeks, or return in fewer than four weeks. Ultimately, it appears likely Prescott will be turning his attention to 2025. Cooper Rush will replace Prescott as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback, although head coach Mike McCarthy told CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson that there’s a chance we see former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance in some packages. This week, NFL Media reported Prescott’s initial diagnosis was a partial avulsion of his hamstring tendon, meaning the hamstring was partially torn off the bone. Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, (H/T The Athletic), that Prescott would be placed on injured reserve, but didn’t know if the QB would be sidelined four weeks, six weeks or the entire season. 50% of Cowboys’ cap space, $127 million, won’t see field vs Eagles in Week 10, K.D. Drummond, Cowboys Wire Money (not) well spent. There’ll be a lot of money on the sidelines when the Cowboys play tomorrow. The Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones have not come close to capitalizing on their investment in 2024. After spending the entire offseason telling fans that they had to protect the books, the financials are kicking their tails on the way to a lost season. Thanks to a myriad of offseason decisions and untimely injuries, the Cowboys are going to take the field Sunday with barely 50% of their cap space in use against the Philadelphia Eagles. How much? $105.7 million worth; over 41% of 2024’s salary cap of $255.4 million.. When combined with their $21 million in available space, that brings the total to $126.7 million of space that won’t be on the field in Week 10. Led by Dak Prescott’s $40 million and DeMarcus Lawrence’s $20 million cap hits, Dallas has over 20 entries in their ledger of players who will not be able to contribute to the team against the Eagles Cowboys veterans that could be benched as 2024 season falters – Mark Heaney, Inside the Star With the Cowboys season on the rocks, is time running out for Elliott? Last week, Ezekiel Elliott was suspended for a game by the team for “disciplinary” reasons. As it turns out, he had missed three team meetings through the season, and his absence on Fridays before the Falcons game was the “last straw.” I saw quite a few Cowboys fans, including myself, asking the same question: why is he still on the roster? At this point, there shouldn’t be any reason that Elliott gets snaps over them, and if he isn’t being helpful in the locker room as a veteran presence, he doesn’t need to be on the roster. I was a fan of the signing this offseason, but it’s clear that this reunion is just not turning out well. It’s time to move on and start remembering the good times with Zeke. Cowboys Point/Counterpoint: To tank or not to tank, David Howman & Tom Ryle, Blogging the Boys Should the team lose if they ultimately want to win? Tom: Count me in on team tank. Barring a near superhuman performance from Rush, and a lot better play from just about everyone else still healthy enough to take the field, this is as you said a lost cause. I’d even say to just name Trey Lance the starter now. The team needs to see what they have in him, because Prescott just cannot seem to stay healthy. They need to come up with a plan for the future at quarterback, and putting Lance out there to both evaluate and develop would let them know where they stand. The biggest problem with that is getting Mike McCarthy to go along. That is highly questionable unless he has given up on keeping his job. We all know he is gone, but that doesn’t mean he is ready to give up the fight. It would take a direct order from Jerry Jones. That to me is not
Is Dak Prescott playing today? Injury news update for Cowboys quarterback
Is Dak Prescott playing today? Injury news update for Cowboys quarterback K.D. Drummond The Dallas Cowboys have spent the last month trying to figure things out, to no avail. The way the 2024 season has played out for them, it’s probably customary for them to assume the worst while hoping for the best. Well, the best has decided to take a break and keep sending the worst. After their third straight defeat, 27-21 in Week 9 at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons, the Cowboys sit with a 3-5 record and not much hope in sight. Dallas is in the middle of a crucial five-game stretch against the NFC’s best teams and they have not acquitted themselves well. In Test No. 4 they host the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 and their quarterback situation is unideal. That’s because Dak Prescott suffered a hamstring injury during the third quarter of last week’s loss. On top of numerous other injuries the team has had to fight through in 2024, they now move forward without their field general. Prescott has been ruled out of the contest. Not only that, but it’s expected that Prescott is going to undergo season-ending surgery soon. It is expected that Cooper Rush will step in and play for Prescott this week against the Eagles. The last time Rush played against Philadelphia was in 2022, in his fifth and final game as Prescott’s replacement. Now he will start in the first post-Prescott game of 2024. Prescott had been averaging 241 passing yards a game and had a career-worst 3.8% touchdown rate, against a 2.8% interception rate. After signing a $240 million contract extension in the offseason, Prescott and the Cowboys have floundered on offense this season.
