Cowboys news: Christmas Day win breaks Dallas’ 3-game losing streak

The Cowboys snapped their three-game losing streak with a road win in Washington.

This was arguably the worst performance of the season by a Cowboys defense that has cornered the market on being bad.

The Cowboys turned a 21-3 blowout into a fourth-quarter dogfight against a Washington offense playing with a third-string quarterback, Josh Johnson, a 39-year-old playing on his 14th team, all because the defense turned into Santa Claus, giving up yards like gifts on this Christmas Day game.

It was a downright embarrassment.

Washington averaged more than 8 yards per play for much of the game.

Credit quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense for saving the day. Prescott didn’t have his best game. He was off for much of it but passed for two touchdowns and converted a key fourth down in the fourth quarter to close the game.

It should be the last time Prescott plays this season. He should be in bubble wrap for the season final.

The Cowboys offense wasn’t great on Christmas, but they cashed in when needed most.

LANDOVER, MD – The Cowboys will head back to Dallas on Christmas with a win, improving to 7-8-1 with one game remaining against the New York Giants.

It wasn’t the prettiest game for Dallas, but 21 points on their first three drives and six fourth down conversions plus Dallas’ defense coming up big on third down played a large role in the victory.

Dallas got big individual performances across the board as well, with Malik Davis stepping up in place of Javonte Williams and Jadeveon Clowney showing his veteran savvy for the Cowboys’ defense.

Let’s dive into more news and notes from the Cowboys’ holiday win:

Dallas Cowboys Dak Prescott, KaVontae Turpin made Christmas Day history – Blogging The Boys

Dak Prescott and KaVontae Turpin land themselves in NFL record books for their Christmas Day big play.

The Dallas Cowboys made some history on Christmas Day.

In the first half of the Cowboys game against the Washington Commanders, Dak Prescott found KaVontae Turpin for what went as an 86-yard touchdown. It was a huge moment in the game, propelling the Cowboys to a big lead. As it turns out, it made Christmas Day history.

This game marked the 33rd ever NFL contest to be played on Christmas Day and Turpin now has the longest touchdown that the day has ever produced. When the Cowboys season has gone as poorly as this one has, you look for the good anywhere you can, especially on Christmas.

Offensively the Cowboys saw a lot of success during their win, and the collective hope is surely that it all translates into next season. The defense still was an issue that will have to be overhauled this offseason, but they did just enough to help win the game.

Jerry Jones gets Cowboys in holiday spirit with incredible Santa stunt – Josh Sanchez, SI.com

Santa Jerry.

Dallas and the Commanders kick off on Thursday afternoon on Netflix, but it appears they had an eventful night before Christmas, according to team owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Jones spoke to 105.3 The Fan before kickoff to share a little story about a stunt he pulled with the team to get everyone into the holiday spirit.

According to Jones, a Jerry Claus was making his way around the team hotel, passing out gifts to the players throughout the night.

“I know this (team) got so much out of it, I’ll never forget it,” Jones said with a laugh, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. “A lot of fun.”

Despite taking hits, ‘no question’ Dak Prescott wants to play in Week 18 vs. Giants – Tommy Yarish, DallasCowboys.com

Dak Prescott wants to play in Week 18, despite taking a beating in Washington.

LANDOVER, MD – Dak Prescott walked into the postgame press conference room following the Cowboys’ 30-23 win over the Commanders on Christmas Day with a hoodie that read, “Wake Up Happy.” After taking six sacks and 11 quarterback hits, that won’t be the only feeling that Prescott wakes up with.

“I’ll wake up happy for sure, but I’ll probably wake up a little sore too.” Prescott said.

Even still battered and bruised with a 7-8-1 record in tow and being eliminated from the playoffs, there’s no doubt in Prescott’s mind that he wants to, and expects to, play in the Cowboys’ season finale next week against the Giants.

“For sure, no question,” Prescott said when asked if he wanted to play up next week. “I love this game, I love any opportunity that I get to play it. That being said, if I get to go out there, I’m going to give it my best, prepare the same way, I’m going to be the same player that you guys know. I understand, the reasons why maybe not, and if I’m approached with that, I’ll handle that then…”

“In my mind, any conversations I’ve had to Schotty or anybody about it would be I’m playing.”
